As a general rule, you should always purchase patio enclosure building material that comes as modular systems, so that you can easily adjust them to fit a compact space in a small city apartment or a sprawling yard in a large country house. Modular enclosures are actually quite common these days. Just visit any home depot shop to talk to an authorized representative. They usually accommodate requests for custom made patio enclosures (for a higher price, of course). They will typically visit your home to do the measurements and will install the enclosure free of charge once it is done.

Also, be sure to choose only the best materials for your structure. The most common ones are toughened safety glass and fiberglass. Frames come in different materials and designs, too. Mid-range patio enclosures have aluminum frames, while luxury glass enclosures have chrome, silver or gold frames.

Building a wooden deck onto the back of your home or in your backyard or adding a patio adds value to your house and gives you another space for living and entertaining. A deck or patio is a wonderful place to host a party or to have a few friends over to relax with drinks. It increases the amount of livable space of your home by allowing you to move some of your indoor activities outside. Many people spend most of their summers outdoors on their decks and patios.

Some creative things you can do with your deck or pation are things such as adding another eating area, creating a play space for children, and adding another place to cook and prepare meals. Some people go as far as creating an entire outdoor cooking, eating, and living room area on their decks.

Most people use their decks or patios as an outdoor eating area and many have gas grills to help with cooking. Today, though, more and more people are building entire kitchens on their decks and patios. The sky is the limit as manufacturers are creating outdoor food prep and kitchen equipment specifically geared for the outdoors. Stainless abounds as it is weatherproof and looks good even after a heavy rainstorm. Gas is still the preferred fuel for outdoor cooking. Sinks and small refrigerators are also becoming popular outdoors. It makes food prep and cleanup much easier if you have a sink right near your outdoor gas cook stove.

Outdoor dining furniture has improved over the years. Previously, you had you choice of metal tables and chairs. Now, you will find all types of exotic woods, man-made wicker, and even weatherproof upholstered furniture for your outdoor dining area.

And for relaxing, the days of folding lawn chairs are over! Overstuffed chairs with water-resistant fabrics are popular, as are synthetic wicker furnishings with weatherproof cushions. And the fabric choices are vast allowing you to color coordinate with almost any outdoor décor on your deck or patio.

So don't think of your deck or patio as simply a place to hang out outdoors. Think of them as an extension of your indoor living space.

Outdoor Living

Recently, I went to visit a neighbor. Quite the weekend warrior, he had completed a nice deck with a barbecue area. Since he is pretty good with his hands he was able to build a nice area, relatively inexpensively, that could comfortably seat about 8 people for quiet evenings with friends.

I was impressed with it, to say the least. He had put a lot of thought into the design and layout, used quality long lasting building materials, and really paid attention to the details. This one area had probably increased the value of his home by at least 10 to 15 thousand dollars, almost 8 times what he spent on construction materials. Then, my attention was drawn to his choice in outdoor living furniture.

The same person that had taken such care and precision to build a show piece deck had gone to the local discount chain store and bought the "on sale" bargain set of outdoor living furniture. Although the style choice fit nicely into the look and feel of his deck, the quality did not match his own craftsmanship.

I looked a little closer at the wood frames, cushions, and joinery. While sturdy and strong when new, all of the pieces would be shaky and dangerous within a couple or years out in the weather. He had also purchased a couple of aluminum sling style chairs and chaise loungers that were made with very thin tubes, and mesh. These pieces were sturdy and attractive, when new, but an expensive replacement with in a couple of years and an accident waiting to happen.

In an effort to create an attractive area for the least amount of money, my neighbor had not thought about how soon he would have to replace his outdoor living furniture selection. He had neglected to think long term in his choice. Additionally, this type of outdoor furnishing would diminish the price of his home, should he sell it after a couple of years. He would have to replace it to attain the highest available price. So many people fall into this same trap.

Whether you call it outdoor living furniture, patio furniture or lawn and deck furniture, quality and durability are crucial to your choice. Outdoor living furniture includes: chairs, tables, dining sets, bar tables and chairs, lounge chairs, swings, hammocks, and much more and is made from materials like wicker, plastic, wood, aluminum, wrought iron, and steel.

Many homeowners spend countless hours and large sums of money constructing a beautiful deck or patio, but unwisely furnish it with outdoor living furniture that will not hold up to the years. Outdoor living furniture allows you to delight in your backyard, decompress after a hard day, or enjoy a beautiful evening watching the sunset. Choose the quality wisely!

When selecting your outdoor living furniture, you will obviously select something that will not only be attractive, but affordable. However, it is crucial that you think long term when determining affordability.

Consider comfort and style. It is important to buy your outdoor living furniture with cushions, Patio Swing, gliding chaise lounges, and even a camping table or camping chair. Does your furniture match the style of your house and yard? Does it reflect your personal style as well? Do you live in a traditional home or a more modernistic home? Is it a fenced in yard or do you have waterfront property?

Will it be in direct sunlight? Will it be stored or covered during the winter season? How soon will your have to replace it? Does the construction material hold up well to the climate in your region? Will it be staying with the property should you decide to sell? Your new home will probably have a different style, so taking it with you may not be an option.

Outdoor Living on Your Deck or Patio

Begin with the necessary spadework according to weather conditions, area, and usage of a patio. The next step is selecting material from a comprehensive range, including polycarb panels for high summer or winter temperatures, vinyl opaque all weather conditions, vinyl translucent and clear panels suitable for use in milder weather conditions, aluminum pan roof that is cool, durable and requiring little maintenance, or Columbus  providing insulation for a strong low-maintenance roof in Columbus location. The panels should fit and install easily, and offer design flexibility. Check if the gutter system is accessible for cleaning whether it is w-pan gutter, roll form gutter or extruded gutter and valance.

Aluminum carports and patio covers have become a popular and attractive home improvement. The product itself has been in use for years. As a light weight and durable material, aluminum can be a great alternative to stick built or steel structures. Features, colors, and styles have evolved over the years to give homeowners many choices. Today we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these popular aluminum structures.

Advantages:

1) Durability - My parents have been living in the same house for over 30 years. Their patio cover was installed in the late 1960s, and is still standing and functional. This product will stand the test of time with little more than a cleaning once a year. Most companies engineer their units to withstand wind and snow loads. As a result, baring natural weather disasters, your patio cover or carport should give you years of use.

2) Attractive - As stated above with a little maintenance your carport or patio cover will stay looking good for years. The aluminum pans will never rust. There are a variety of colors to choose from and several styles of framework that should satisfy any homeowner.

3) Structural simplicity - Because of the light weight nature of aluminum, a patio cover can be attached directly to your patio slab, and carports can be attached directly to your driveway. Also attachment to the house requires minimal anchoring. Note: some areas may require posts to be set in concrete, check with the codes department in your area. One of the best advantages of Aluminum structures is the minimum fall required for installation. Aluminum carports and patio covers require only ¼" of fall /ft. spanned. A shingled roof requires a minimum of 4" of fall /ft spanned, which often creates problems with head room on the outside.

4) Functionality - Very few home improvement projects can provide the quality usefulness that an aluminum patio cover or carport can. Patio covers over decks and patios offer escape from direct sun and weather, and can make them much more useful and enjoyable. Aluminum carports (free standing or attached) can provide great shelter for your vehicles when a garage is not available .

Disadvantages

1) Bird Nests - The W-pan aluminum is notorious for attracting birds. There are several plugs that manufacturers offer and it is highly recommended you insist on these at the time of installation. They do add cost but will save you from the endless hassle of cleaning out the pans.

2) Trees - All Aluminum carports and patio covers come with built in gutters and downspouts, in the fall if you live in a wooded area leaves are a constant problem. Since aluminum structures do not require as much slope on the roof, leaves and debris is much more likely to accumulate. The most common problem I see is where this accumulation of leaves is left unattended, stopping up gutters, backing up water and ultimately causing the panels to bow and leak.

3) Rust on framework - Most aluminum patio covers and carports are installed with steel bar joists, and posts, and while painted before installation, the natural exposure to the elements will eventually cause the parts to show rust (especially at ground contact)

4) Hail - The single most, problem with aluminum carports and patio covers is hail. We replace several of these each year. Because of the light weight nature of aluminum a hail storm can leave small unattractive dings in the panels. Most homeowners insurance cover this and in most cases if hail is hard enough you will have other damage to your home

As a contractor for many years, I have learned to appreciate the functional beauty of aluminum carports and patio covers. The advantages of these products far out weigh the disadvantages. Almost all the disadvantages can be prevented with simple maintenance.

Cost Of A Patio Enclosure

Outdoor Living Furniture - Bargain Or Investment?

Mobile home repair can be a daunting task. A popular addition to mobile homes are aluminum patio covers. Aluminum patio covers offer a nice opportunity to increase outdoor living space. Typically these structures have a "U Pan" or "V Pan" design. A lot of people have tried to enclose the area underneath and heat it. Most people fail at this. I will tell you how to successfully accomplish this.

The hardest part to this task is effectively insulating the aluminum patio cover. Most people will see how the pans are shaped and become perplexed. The most effective way is to fill the low voids of the cover with 2" foam board. Measure and cut strips of the foam board to fit in between the ridges of the pans. You want the surface of the foam board to be flush with the top of the ridges of the pans. If you are not flush yet, add an appropriate thickness of foam to make the surfaces flush. Once flush, overlay a foam board across the entire patio cover. You can use 3/4" or 1" foam. Use screws with washers to attach the top layer of foam. If you are not going to finish the interior of the roof and don't want to see screws poking through, you can glue the foam down.

The next step is to install a rubber EPDM membrane over the roof surface. Black rubber is going to be the most readily available and inexpensive. I recommend using white EPDM rubber instead of black. You might have to call around to obtain this but it is worth the trouble. A white roof surface will reflect the sun rays in the summer time and help on keeping it cool. The insulation will keep the heat in during the winter months. Typically you would not glue the membrane down. Termination bars held down by screws are the best way to attach the roof. Install the termination bar on the vertical surface of the gutter/fascia that is bordering the patio cover. Use a 1/4" hex head screw that is approx 1" in length.

Make sure to properly tuck or flash the roof where it meets the existing structure. If you have an existing rubber roof and you have enough material, detach the termination bar and tuck the rubber under the other membrane. Then re-attach the termination bar.

You now have an insulated roof that you can enclose to fit your lifestyle. Use conventional wall construction to assemble and build walls around the area.

Patio covers are simply roof, canopies, and awnings installed on patios to serve as shades and overhead protection from the elements which allows the household members to enjoy sitting out on the patio for more than the hot summer months.

Adding patio shades to your outdoor room, asides giving welcoming protection from the hot sun, will equally act as a shield from the rain and protection for the furniture, furnishings, and floor, especially if you have wood flooring. Besides, patios can end up being wind funnels or warm ovens if a roof or other form of covering is not installed.

To choose a patio cover, you must first consider the design and size of the space, the style of the house, and the surrounding landscape. Patio shades must be in accord with its surroundings and harmonise well with hues, and the general characteristic features of the structure.

The types of patio cover vary and can be temporary, permanent, adjustable, or portable structures. Some of the most popular choices of homeowners are:

  1. Translucent plastic roof
  2. Bamboo and reed shades
  3. Lath overheads and awnings
  4. Treated canvas covers
  5. 'Eggcrate' patio shades
  6. Louvred covers
  7. Tempered glass roof covering

You can also have a combination of any two of the above. For example, you can install a combination of tempered glass and louvred covers, where the louvred slats allow for ventilation and airflow.

Before You Decide on a Patio Shade, Ask Yourself...

What things should you consider before making an informed decision? First, you need to consider the future of your property. Do you have future upgrade plans? For instance, will the now open patio eventually evolve into an enclosed outdoor room?

If you do have home improvement plans slated for the future, it may be wise to build a frame that will eventually serve the purpose of retaining structural support, in readiness for a more permanent, or, substantial patio roof.

Secondly, you must consider the properties of shades and covers available and their workability with your patio theme. Additionally, you’ll need to know:

  • The advantages and disadvantages of each type
  • The durability of its material
  • How it will be maintained
  • Its ease of installation (or not)
  • Is it budget friendly?
  • It's lifespan

Translucent Patio Covers

Translucent roof materials are great for diffusing sunlight, intercepting direct heat, and protection against the rain. They are lightweight, shatterproof and quite durable and are available in a variety of colours, each transmitting varying amounts of heat and light.

They also come with a choice of textures ranging from the smooth and flat, to the pebble-grained textured translucent panels.

Translucent patio roofs are one of the most popular forms of covers and one of the quickest to install. If you are a hands-on individual that’s good at DIY tasks, you will find translucent shades easy to handle and work with.

This type of patio cover has a couple of disadvantages. They cast their colour on the patio and every single item within it and will even cast a tint, depending on its colour, in an interior room if installed close to a window in the house. Also, there may be a problem with heat trap (if the roof cover is attached to two or more walls of the house) if adequate ventilation is not provided.

Bamboo and Reed Shades

Both woven reed and bamboo are appealing roof covers for patios. They are eco-friendly and lightweight enough to require minimum support and under-structure.

Many homeowners love the irregular shade patterns bamboo and reed patio covers provide on a nice and warm sunny afternoon and find it warm and pleasant to lounge in on a warm sunny afternoon. Being a natural material, they make handsome and very effective shades.

Patio canopies made from woven natural materials are very affordable, eco-friendly, and easy to install. They are about one of the easiest overhead shades to install. It is important to point out that bamboo roof shades are longer lasting than reed shades.

They come with some disadvantages though. They are not very durable and cannot withstand harsh weather conditions so, if you live in temperate regions, bamboo and reed covers can last for several seasons but if you live in regions with harsher weather conditions, it is best not to consider using these types of patio covers.

Lath (Lumber & Batten) Patio Roofs

Wood lath is a classic patio cover and one of the oldest and most versatile outdoor room covers that's simple to install, affordable, and adaptable enough to give minimum or maximum protection as many of the other patio covers. They can be used in their natural state, painted, or stained and come in standard sizes of 1” x 1”, 1” x 2”, and 2” x 2”.

It is easy to get creative with lath patio covers and patterns and designs that can be created include:

  • Staggered spacing
  • Rustic trellis
  • Uniform spacing
  • Mixed sizes and spacing

If you decide to use lath as your patio cover, make sure you choose rot-resistant wood. Hardwoods like cedar, cypress, and redwood resist decay are unlikely to warp or twist with weather changes. They can be used in their natural form without painting or staining.

Lath roofs have one disadvantage. When it is sunny, they cast sharply defined shadow lines in dark and light shades and some people find this quite irritating, especially when trying to read. However, the classic beauty of lath roofs is clearly irresistible.

Treated Canvas Patio Covers

Canvas is a tightly woven textile that can be found in a variety of weaves and in an assortment of colours. Its patterns and textile construction include checks, stripes, and plaid designs. Shades and covers made from treated canvas will add cheerful colours to dull patios.

The treated canvas that’s ideal for the outdoors are colour-fast and have water repelling properties as well as fire-retarding properties. They are also treated to resist fungal growth. Treatment is done by applying acrylic or vinyl coatings.

Various weights of canvas will provide anything from a light to dense shade over a patio, so, before you decide on using canvas for your patio shade, it is good to note that if its weight is too light, it will not withstand severe weather, and if it is too heavy, it will take 'forever' to dry after a heavy rainfall, something that may likely cause mildew.

The popular type of canvas fabric called shade cloth (comes in green saran and black polypropylene) has a weave that is like those used for window screening. The weave construction of shade cloth will give almost any degree of shade, from 6% up to 90%.

Some other synthetic textiles like acrylic, fibreglass, and vinyl coated nylon can also be used as patio canopies and like canvas covers, serve more as temporary patio covers than permanent ones.

Disadvantages of using canvas material as an outdoor room cover? It should not be used as a permanent shade because its colour will fade with time, must be dried out thoroughly to prevent mould, it will not withstand strong winds, and it is likely to shrink. Additionally, if you touch wet un-treated canvas that has collected rainwater from the inside, water will soak through and drip on to the patio due to capillary action.

Egg-Crate Awning

The term 'egg-crate' is a name that is erroneously used, but one that refers to open-air patio canopies that's laced with flowering climbing vines, a feature that adds aesthetic value to any patio. They serve as natural showcases for vines that send out fragrant scents at various times of the year.

Egg-crate patio shades allow for free vertical airflow whilst giving a feel of protection to a patio that needs a good amount of sunlight and breeze, and when the foliage becomes dense, it will serve as a protection against harsh sunlight or light drizzles of rain.

They make a fantastic roof canopy and can be constructed easily using any common softwood, but harder woods such as cypress or redwood are popularly used because they require no protective coatings.

Louvred Awnings

For a look that is tailored, and airy, louvred awnings fit the picture. They block out the sun at certain times of the day and let it filter in at others by setting the louvres at varying angles to make the most of their width to block out the sun. They are permanent shades, and like lath shades, are constructed with a parallel arrangement of strips of wood.

Louvred patio covers come as adjustable or fixed types and whilst the adjustable types can be shifted to allow in almost any degree of light or shade in the daytime, the fixed louvres can be installed to block out the sun during the hours of the day that it is not required.

Disadvantages? Louvred awnings are expensive and need to be installed by a professional because its installation is tricky and if care is not taken while it is being installed, once you nail it down, it becomes hard to re-do.

Tempered Glass Patio Roofs

Tempered glass canopies are a popular design element added to patios and conservatories and have proven to be a common way to increase the light and feeling of being in an outdoor room while providing shelter from rain or harsh sunlight.

If you wish to allow light to infuse into the patio, you should consider using the clear type but if you prefer protection from the sun then it is good to opt for the tinted types.

The best way to install a glass canopy over a patio is to frame and install using an aluminium extrusion to support the glass canopy, as long as you ensure you have adequate downward fixing, especially in high-wind areas. If the roof area is small, the tempered glass canopy can be suspended but if it is a large area, it is best to fix the canopy directly to the building’s structure.

They are fairly straightforward to install since installation is primarily subject to the span of the glass between fixing points.

11 Ways to Turn Your Patio Into a Garden

Patio Covers For Entertaining Outdoors

Patio covers protect against the sun's harsh rays and would make your guests want to stay on for a little longer. Whether you're having a barbecue or afternoon cocktails with friends, patio covers keep them comfortable and protected.

Constructing a patio cover is almost like adding a new room or wing to your house. Some homeowners use this space to create a pocket garden and throw in a few lawn chairs and a table, while others treat them as semi-permanent additions to their residences, setting up a card table, or a television and some comfortable lounging chairs.

When you entertain out on the patio, you become more relaxed and so will your guests. First of all, you'll no longer have to worry about spills on your carpet or rowdy kids toppling over your expensive decor. Second, adults can enjoy chatting with each other under the comfortable shade of patio covers while they keep an eye on their children running around the garden.

There is a wide range of patio covers to choose from, but you first have to determine why you need to construct one. There are also certain places where it's necessary for the owner to secure a building permit, even if you're only installing a patio cover, so you need to look into this as well.

Do you want your patio cover made out of wood? Do you want it with a natural finish, or do you prefer to paint it with color? There are also other materials to choose from, such as prefabricated PVC or aluminum, which can last longer and withstand extreme weather conditions.

If you're planning to do this project yourself, check your patio layout and take the measurements as accurately as possible. Once you have the dimensions, the salesperson at the home depot would be able to make an estimate of the number of aluminum or wood panels you would require for your project.

Benefits of Insulated Patio Covers

Selecting a Patio Cover Design is a personal choice. If an architect designed the patio then the cover has to be of appropriate quality and custom made. But if the patio has been done by you, then decide on a cover that is easily fixed and durable. The neighbor's Patio Cover does look good but it might be out of budget or would not match with house layout and usage. The patio could be for general use or a utility room to place a grill, clothes hanger, a table and few chairs; for entertaining purposes; a hobby or recreation room or an all weather living area for you and family pets.

Consult friends and magazines and do not go by availability. Designs are plentiful, from colored or striped awnings for partial covers, patio umbrellas for limited area cover, or solid aluminum or wood patio covers for complete protection against sun and rain. The wood or aluminum wood Patio Cover could be practical and fashionable and is available in a lattice or dome-shaped design. These covers are made of the highest quality material and do not twist, rot, warp or decay. Wood is being replaced with aluminum as it is maintenance-free, providing protection from the sun and rain for extended periods. Solar design patio covers are ideal in areas with plenty of sunlight. These covers, along with offering shade, produce clean and environmentally friendly electricity.

Selecting a Patio Cover Design also depends on the décor and shape of structure supporting it. A solid cover design is a good choice if you want to block out sun and rain or do not want to cover or remove outdoor items. In this case, an alternate would be to cover a portion of the patio with a solid roof and other half with lattice design. Another Patio Cover Design is pergola, which complements an attractive backyard. One can create a relaxing outdoor atmosphere with a pergola structure either attached to the house or free standing. The angled slats give an airy feeling and at same time block sun to provide comfortable shade.

If you are a practical person then select a gable Patio Cover framed with aluminum rafters with no visible fastening system or ugly screws. If you really want to make full use of the patio in rain and sunshine then have a clear canopy made with indestructible polycarbonate with aluminum frames that will not rust. The canopy is available in clear and bronze tints.

Patio Cover Designs

Patio Covers complement your home's architectural style and at same time provide outdoor space for entertainment or a quiet game of pool. The scene gets interrupted with temperature and weather changes, and you are left with no option but to move to the main house. A Lattice Patio Cover is an easy-to-use, economical and versatile system to protect your patio from the vagaries of nature. The discrepancy is in that, unlike solid Patio Covers, Lattice Patio Covers block 50 to 60 percent of the sun.

On most counts it is weather conditions and the exterior of the house that decide in favor of Lattice Patio Covers. Cover material has to be water resistant and rust proof, and should not crack, peel or split. Wooden Lattice Patio Covers have a natural appeal, but require regular painting and checks for termites etc. In keeping with preferred sensibilities, Patio Cover manufacturers have found an answer with aluminum that resembles wood in form. The new wood-grained aluminum gives the look of real painted wood that is UV resistant, heat and fire resistant, termite proof and does not crack, peel or rot for first three years. Another advantage is that aluminum Lattice Covers have built-in gutters presenting a clean attractive roofline. One can select from factory-baked enamel finish of natural cedar, or from a variety of colors available.

The Lattice Patio Cover with open framework of crisscrossed wood or metal strips in regular or patterned spaces is a new design available in regional, standard or custom models. These covers can be remodeled to fit in with any patio, whether attached to the house or a free-standing one in the yard. For a greener look, one can cover the Lattice with vines or other flowery creepers or, for a modernistic design, use half solid and half Lattice.
